On the morning of October 2, 1988, Donnie awoke to find himself lying on a road on Carpathan Ridge, and rode his bike back were his mother, who asked him where he had been. With his accounts saying that he had a history of sleep walking, he began to hear a mysterious voice and slept-walked toward it. The voice took him all the way to a golf course, where its owner was revealed to be a man dressed in bunny suit named Frank. He informed Donnie that the world will end in 28 days 6 hours 42 minutes and 12 seconds, having him write it on his own arm. Afterwards, Donnie was awakened by two golf players, and headed home to see that his house was landed upon overnight by a huge artifact with the appearance of jet engine, particularly crashing into his room. His older sister Elizabeth noted that it looked like some sort of alien technology, and the FAA investigators had no idea where it came from.
While in class that morning, a new student named Gretchen Ross entered the class room and is forced to choose a seat, she is reluctant to take the seat next to Donnie. An interest in each other is built at this moment which is carried on through out the next 28 days. It becomes clear that the mysterious manifest has some sort of power over Donnie, as he asks him to take an axe and break a water main. Donnie later finds out that the school is flooded and knows he did it. The next day policemen arrived to analyze different students' handwriting to compare to a message the perpetrator had written on the ground. He is never found out. He then has another vision of Frank the night after, asking him why he made Donnie break the water main as a PTA meeting happens at the school.
He goes to his science teacher and asks about time travel, resulting in him getting a book about the topic that was written by Roberta Sparrow, aka Grandma Death. He speaks to his therapist about this, also speaking of what Roberta told him.
